Sneaky Pete – a sly Family Business Crime Drama

by | Lifestyle

If Sneaky Pete sneaked past your streaming options, think again.  While the themes of fraud, identity theft, violence, death, and moral compromise are similar to other family business crime dramas, they’re balanced with humor, charm, and fun.

Sneaky Pete is the story of Marius Josipovic, a con artist who assumes the identity of his former cellmate, Pete, to hide from Vince Lonigan, a crime boss who is wonderfully portrayed by co-creator, Bryan Cranston.  Marius owes Vince $100,000 and Vince wants his money.

Marius knows that Pete is estranged from his family so he plans to con them out of the money.  While the premise may seem absurd, Marius is a fantastic con man and skillfully pulls off the scam.  Pete's family owns a small bail bonds business, and Marius must navigate their trust while juggling his own criminal schemes. As Marius becomes entwined in both the family’s personal dramas and their borderline illegal business operations, Marius struggles to keep his deception from unraveling while balancing his deepening relationship with the family members.

SNEAKY PETE CHARACTERS

Pete/Marius

Marius’s impersonation of Pete is the show’s central plotline, and the family business provides both the cover and the stakes for his con. By becoming Pete, Marius must adopt not only a new identity but also a set of professional responsibilities.  Layered on top of these challenges, Marius has to navigate the unique situation of being part of a  family-owned business where decisions are never straight forward.

Audrey Bernhardt (Owner/Pete’s Aunt)

Audrey is the matriarch and head of the family bail bonds business.  She's responsible for maintaining authority, enforcing rules, and ensuring the business operates efficiently and profitably.  Her interactions with Marius are central to the series’ tension: she tests his loyalty, assesses his competence, and decides whether he belongs within both the family and the business hierarchy.

Julia Bernhardt (Audrey’s Granddaughter/Pete’s 2nd Cousin)

Julia, along with her brother Taylor and younger sister Carly, were raised by their grandparents when their parents died in a car crash.

Julia excels at making bad decisions...she’s been divorced twice, and her two children have different fathers.  Despite those bad decisions, she has matured into a competent adult.  Julia works in the family bail bonds but because of her past mistakes—especially when it comes to men—Audrey doubts her ability to take over the business. That doubt fuels Julia’s determination to prove she’s more than her past and fully capable of carrying the family business forward.

Taylor Bowman (Pete’s Cousin)

Taylor Bowman means well, but he rarely has the sharpness to back it up. As a small-town cop, Taylor should be a real advantage for the family, but his spotty record and repeated exam failures leave him insecure and constantly trying to prove himself. He’s fiercely loyal—sometimes too loyal—and often bends the rules to help his sister or the Bernhardt bail bonds business.

Otto Bernhardt (Audrey’s husband)

Otto Bernhardt is Audrey's husband and the co-owner of their bail bonds business, but plays second fiddle to Audrey. Otto is a former firefighter who's deeply principled but also surprisingly adaptable when protecting his family.

How does Sneaky Pete fit in the world of family business?

One of the central questions for all family businesses is whether family comes first or the business comes first.  In Sneaky Pete, the Bernhardt family frequently prioritizes the bail bonds business above personal relationships, showing that loyalty is often conditional on usefulness. When mistakes occur—whether financial, operational, or ethical—the family responds with suspicion, discipline, or temporary exclusion, rather than unconditional support.

As with many family business television shows, Sneaky Pete always deals with succession issues.  Julia wants to take over the business and has many of the skills needed including operational competence, working with a combustible client base, and a real interest in the business.  In Audrey’s mind, she’s not ready and may never be ready.

Should I watch Sneaky Pete?

Sneaky Pete takes full advantage of the “con man in a morally corrupt industry” with smart writing and memorable performances. Giovanni Ribisi captivates as Marius, a clever con artist hiding behind his cellmate’s identity. He brings intelligence and subtle moral complexity to the family he infiltrates.  Marin Ireland’s Julia Bernhardt is quietly compelling and layered, perfectly capturing a character who is both competent and humanly flawed. Margo Martindale delivers a standout performance as the formidable and sharp-tongued grandmother, bringing both humor and gravitas that elevate the family dynamic. Their interplay, along with the show’s tense plotting, dark humor, and intricate schemes, makes Sneaky Pete an engaging, character-driven crime drama that keeps viewers invested in every twist and turn.
