Today, we are facing unprecedented and increasingly complex and converging global challenges. From pandemics to climate change, from vast wealth disparity to political and economic instability, it can be overwhelming to find one’s purpose in such a rapidly evolving environment. However, the Design Your Life framework offers a way to navigate these challenges and find meaning and purpose in life.

Design Your Life is a framework based on the principles of design thinking. It was first introduced by two Stanford University professors, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, in their book Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life. The framework encourages individuals to approach their lives as a creative process, where they are the designers, and their lives are the products they create. In addition, the book provides additional strategies and a template, via a workbook, to Design Your Life with others and engage in activities that will help you apply the principles of design thinking to revisit at various points in your life.

The offers key insights into identifying purpose in a chaotic society:

Focus on what you can control. In a world where so many things feel out of our control, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless. However, the Design Your Life framework encourages individuals to focus on what they can control, such as their mindset, their actions, and their relationships.

Seek out experimentation and iteration. In a world where things are changing rapidly, it can be difficult to know what will work and what won’t. However, by experimenting with different ideas and approaches, individuals can learn what works for them and what doesn’t. They can then iterate and refine their approach over time, adapting to changing circumstances.

Reframe problems as opportunities. In a chaotic world, it can be easy to see challenges as obstacles. However, by reframing problems as opportunities, individuals can find creative solutions to even the most daunting challenges. This mindset can help individuals overcome setbacks and find new ways to pursue their goals.

Collaboration equals success.  In a world where many problems are global in nature, it is essential to collaborate with others to find solutions. By seeking out help and input from others, individuals can gain new perspectives and ideas that can help them achieve their goals more effectively.

Focus on your passion.  There are so many urgent problems to solve, it can be easy to lose sight of what really matters to us. However, by focusing on our passions and interests, we can find meaning and purpose in our lives even in the midst of chaos.

Building a well-lived life as an ongoing Journey.  In a world where things are constantly changing, it is essential to recognize that finding one’s purpose is not a one-time event. Instead, it is a process that requires ongoing experimentation and iteration.

Centerprising, a global family business advisory firm, is offering a five-session seminar to Design Your Life taught by a leading expert in the field of social entrepreneurship.  This program has the unique addition of mindfulness and exploration of a range of social enterprise models as additional supportive guidance to the authors’ original framework. The program offers a practical and actionable approach to finding one’s purpose in today’s chaotic world. By focusing on what we can control, experimenting and iterating, reframing problems as opportunities, collaborating with others, focusing on our passions and interests, and recognizing that finding our purpose is an ongoing process, we can find meaning and purpose in our lives even amid chaos. The Design Your Life framework provides a way to navigate today’s challenges and build a well-lived, joyful life. These are quite effective in helping you think of the process.
